Achieving Aluminium Self-sufficiency, MIND ID Strengthens 900 Thousand KTPA Production Capacity

24 July 2025

Jakarta, 24 July 2025 – In the midst of the rising domestic needs for aluminium as a strategic material to support the development of the manufacturing and renewable energy industry, MIND ID, or Mining Industry Indonesia, the Holding State-Owned Enterprise for the Mining Industry, is consistent in developing the downstream supply chain integration.

MIND ID, through PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (INALUM), is preparing the increase national aluminium production capacity to 900,000 tons per annum (KTPA) in 2029, up from the current installed capacity of 275,000 KTPA.

This step is being taken to continuously reduce the distance between supply and demand for national aluminium, which currently reaches 1.2 million tons per annum. Domestic aluminium consumption is estimated to increase by 600% in the next 30 years, particularly to support the ecosystem of the electric vehicle and electric vehicle battery industry.

The use of aluminium material for one battery pack reaches 18%, and the production of a solar PV with 1 MW capacity would need about 21 tons of aluminium.

MIND ID is currently preparing a new aluminium production facility project in Mempawah with a production capacity of up to 600 KTPA. If combined with the existing facilities owned by INALUM, the total capacity of MIND ID will reach about 900 KTPA.

In the upstream sector, MIND ID is operating the Smelter Grade Alumina Refinery (SGAR) Phase I with a capacity of 1 million tons of alumina per annum, which becomes the main raw material for aluminium production. To strengthen the sustainability of alumina supply, SGAR Phase II is also being prepared and will add production capacity of 1 million tons per annum.

MIND ID, through PT Aneka Tambang Tbk, is also preparing the strengthen the bauxite ore supply by building a washed bauxite facility of 1.47 million tons per annum in the operational territory of Mempawah.

To ensure the integration of the supply chain from upstream to downstream in the operational territory of Mempawah, MIND ID President Director, Maroef Sjamsoeddin, paid a visit to SGAR Phase 1 in Mempawah on Thursday (24/7/2025).

Together with other MIND ID Board of Commissioners and Board of Directors, Maroef observed the SGAR Phase I alumina production process, preparations for the construction of SGAR Phase II, and the plan to construct a new aluminium smelter.

Maroef said that bauxite, alumina, and aluminium are raw materials with a crucial role in supporting the sustainable manufacturing and renewable energy industries in Indonesia.

“The MIND ID Group is committed to becoming the integrated aluminium downstreaming mover in order to strengthen Indonesia’s position as the global aluminium producer, and capable of sovereignity in supporting the manufacturing industry while at the same time reducing import dependency,” he said.

Maroef ensures that the expansion of the aluminium downstreaming ecosystem capacity will pay due attention to the sustainable production aspect as well as world-class operational excellence.

MIND ID also ensures that the maintenance and reliability of each strategic project will be even more efficient, transparent, and adaptive towards market dynamics.

In project development, MIND ID also ensures the integration of supporting infrastructure such as logistics, as well as paying due attention to the social sustainability around the operational areas.

“For MIND ID, the strengthening of the integrated downstream ecosystem is an investment for the future of the nation. We have to manage it responsibly, with professionalism, and a transformation spirit to enable Indonesia to become a sovereign country in supporting natural resource-based industrialization,” he concluded.
