MIND ID Group Encourages Coastal Communities to Raise Economy

Jakarta, 6 April 2024 – National Fishermen’s Day is commemorated every year on 6 April. As a momentum to raise the welfare of the coastal communities, MIND ID, the Holding State-Owned Enterprise for the Mining Industry, takes an active role in strengthening the empowerment of the fishing communities to become more prosperous.

MIND ID, through its members, continues its efforts to support the economic improvement of coastal communities and fishermen’s groups in the operational areas of the company.

“The initiatives conducted by MIND ID Group members show that the business process can run in line with the welfare of the local people and conservation of the environment, including for the coastal communities,” said MIND ID Corporate Secretary Heri Yusuf.

MIND ID Group member, PT Timah Tbk, for instance. This company supports the activities of the fishermen’s groups by providing assistance such as fishing nets, improvement of facilities and infrastructure of the fishermen’s groups, and repairs of fishing boats for the fishermen’s groups in the Bangka Belitung Island Province and Riau Island Province.

That’s not all, PT Timah Tbk also conducted empowerment programs for fishermen’s groups and coastal communities. Empowerment such as involving the fishermen in making coral gardens and fishing grounds in Bangka Belitung Island Province.

While in the Riau Island Province, precisely in Kundur, PT Timah frequently involved groups of fishermen to plant mangroves in an effort to protect the coastal ecosystem, install abrasion barriers, and restock mangrove crabs.

Another MIND ID Group Member, PT ANTAM Tbk, through its North Konawe Nickel Mining Business Unit, conducted an initiative to construct Karama Jaring Apung, or floating net cages, by providing guidance to the Tahisi Tapunopaka Fishermen’s Group.

It is hoped that this program will be able to raise income and direct contribution to provide a wider effect on the economic activities of the fishermen’s group and people in Tapunopaka.

In Papua, PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) conducted various programs to empower the fishermen of the Kamoro tribe and fishermen from other tribes in the coastal areas of Mimika Regency through its community development programs.

In implementing the program, PTFI collaborates with the Maria Bintang Laut Cooperative to implement a number of programs that cover fish catching and fish farming.
