MIND ID Group Targets 1% Emission Reduction in 2022

MIND ID or Mining Industry Indonesia, the Holding State-Owned Enterprise for the Mining Industry, with members PT ANTAM Tbk, PT Bukit Asam Tbk, PT Freeport Indonesia, PT Inalum (Persero) and PT Timah Tbk, stipulates its emission reduction target by 1% in 2022.  This commitment represents the efforts of the Company to reduce emission from the energy and Industrial Process and Product Uses (IPPU) by 15.8% in 2030 and to support the zero net aspiration of the Indonesian Government in 2060.

MIND ID Director of Institutional Relations, Dany Amrul Ichdan, stated that “MIND ID’s commitment to emission reduction is aligned to the sustainability aspect of the Company.  The Decarbonization Program is a manifestation of one of the Sustainability Pathway pillars, namely Environment & Climate Change. The MIND ID Group has mapped emission reduction potential in its operational activities.”

The MIND ID Group produces emission from two scopes.  In 2019, Scope I comes from the use of fossil fuel (coal and marine fuel oil) in the processing phase, and diesel fuel for project vehicles and heavy equipment, totalling 2.8 million tons of CO2e greenhouse gas emission produced.  For Scope II – the use the electricity from the PLN (State Electricity Company) grid for operations and production, totalling 0.1 million tons of CO2e.

In 2021, the MIND ID Group produced Business as Usual (BAU) emission from Scope 1 and Scope 2 totalling 3.335 million tons of CO2e from production activities and mining operations.  In 2021, the MIND ID Group succeeded in reducing emission of 71 thousand tons of CO2e or 2.13% of the BAU emission in production activities and mining operations.

In future, the MIND ID Group designs its carbon emission reduction through a combination of initiatives, from fuel transition, production efficiency to carbon offset, as efforts to contribute to sustainable development, specifically Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13, Climate Action. The MIND ID Group also undertakes efforts to produce environmentally friendly energy among the local communities, while at the same time, improving the availability of food in line with SDG 2, Zero Hunger, and support the economy in line with SDG 8, Decent Work and Economic Growth.

PT Bukit Asam Tbk (Bukit Asam) is supporting global carbon emission reduction and G10 Indonesia 2022 Presidency, among others, with the ground breaking of the Solar Power Generator Plant (PLTS) at Ngurah Rai Bali Mandara Toll Road.  Additionally, Bukit Asam has initiated the solar power generator plant at Tanjung Raja Village in Muara Enim for its corporate social responsibility (CSR) program in agriculture.  The power plant is being used as energy source for irrigation pumps, thereby supporting the increase in rice production. While at PT TIMAH Tbk (TIMAH), the company has placed the solar power plant as one of the supporting facilities for the reclamation of former mining land at Selinsing, East Belitung.

Meanwhile, at PT ANTAM Tbk (ANTAM), the use of renewable energy is part of the Company efforts to control carbon emission in its mining activities.  Since 2019, ANTAM has utilized the use of solar cell technology to light the bauxite mining area in West Kalimantan.  Additionally, the use of renewable energy technology also supports the development activities of local communities around the Pongkor, West Java, gold mining area.

Aside from the existing initiatives, the MIND ID Group continues to explore and undertake new opportunities to reduce emission, for example, by using electric battery-based equipment and operational vehicles, natural-based solutions and similar efforts.
