Integrated Copper and Gold Downstreaming, The Path to Industrial Independence

Through the development of integrated copper and gold downstreaming in Gresik, the Holding Company for the Indonesian Mining Industry, MIND ID, consistently strengthens the manufacturing sector. By optimizing domestic mineral downstream products, the company drives import substitution and creates added-value, serving as an engine to bolster Indonesia's economic performance.

MIND ID through Freeport Indonesia, as the copper cathode supplier, is synergizing with PINDAD, a member of DEFEND ID, to optimize copper use in the production of brass cup in Gresik, which has a capacity of 10,000 tons per year.

This synergy represents the mining sector's support for the Indonesian defence industry, which requires a strengthened supply chain for ammunition components.

Moving forward, MIND ID will establish a copper rod and wire production facility with a capacity of up to 300 KTPA, as well as a copper pipe facility with a capacity of 100 KTPA. This strategic initiative optimizes the copper cathodes produced by Freeport Indonesia, directly addressing the evolving demands of the domestic manufacturing sector.

Within the gold downstreaming line, MIND ID is driving an increase in precious metal production capacity. This project will optimize gold bar production from Freeport Indonesia’s precious metal refinery, which utilizes anode slimes as a raw material byproduct of the copper refining process.

The facility that is being built by ANTAM will have a capacity of up to 30 tons or 5 million minted bars per year, ultimately meeting the public’s demand for precious metal investment in Indonesia.

All of these facilities will be built in the JIIPE area in Gresik, East Java, featuring multimodal land and sea connectivity, integrated logistics, and unified licensing services in synergy with PELINDO.

During the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Integrated Copper and Gold Downstreaming. President Prabowo Subianto stated virtually that amid international geopolitical competition, an increasing number of countries seek to dominate natural resource wealth.

Through these strategic downstreaming steps, Indonesia is working to control its natural wealth and utilize it for the nation's interest, marking a path toward the country's economic resurgence.

"We must be brave and capable of controlling our natural resource wealth. This is a form of national courage to control and process resources in our own country. Downstreaming is the only path for us to achieve greater prosperity," he said during his remarks at the Groudbreaking of 13 National Downstreaming Projects Stage II in Cilacap, Central Java, Wednesday (29/4/2026)

MIND ID Director of Downstreaming Strategy and Mineral Ecosystem Tedy Badrujaman stated that this initiative from the MIND ID Group aligns with the government’s mandate and is rooted in the President’s Asta Cita, namely to continue downstreaming and industrialization.

Through the development of this integrated manufacturing facility, Indonesia establishes a stronger domestic copper and gold supply chain, further expanding the manufacturing sector's contribution to the economy.

"This strategic move is part of the larger blueprint of Danantara’s Downstreaming Project, a program that not only builds production capacity but also thoroughly reinforces the foundation of the national strategic industry, from upstream to downstream, and from raw materials to the final products needed by the nation," he concluded.
