Progressive Environmental Investment from MIND ID Group, Hope to Become Barometer for Mining Sector

5 September 2025

JAKARTA – Minister of the Environment and Forestry, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, has placed PT Vale Indonesia Tbk,  a member of MIND ID or Mining Industry Indonesia, the Holding State-Owned Enterprise for the Mining Industry, as an example of progressive and sustainable environmental investment. This appreciation underscored MIND ID’s strategic role as a pioneer which is hoped to become a barometer for responsible mining management in Indonesia.

Minister Hanif focuses on the commitment of Vale Indonesia which places environmental conservation as the culture of the company. Vale has consistently proposed environmental investment without depending on production level. In such an approach, the value of environmental improvements can be suppressed as it is conducted since the beginning, before disaster or damage occurs.

“I see the depth of the environmental investment made. Vale has designed environmental capacity without taking account of the production per year,” Hanif said. “Again, this is not merely praise, but I saw the documents myself and also witnessed the rehabilitation activities in Sorowako,” he continued.

The Ministry of the Environment and Forestry hopes that the steps taken by Vale as well as other MIND ID Members are not only made for the sake of getting the Proper Emas or Gold Proper Award, but as a calling to abide by the constitutional mandate and at the same time protect the Motherland.

Hanif also places much hope in MIND ID becoming a leader and barometer for the national mining industry.  “My deepest hope is that MIND ID is able to become an example and barometer for the management of mining in Indonesia,” he stressed.

Up to 2024, Vale Indonesia has reclaimed 3,800 hectares of land in Sulawesi by planting more than 5 million trees and sowing 2.2 million local tree seedlings. Moreover, Vale is also operating three hydropower plants (PLTA) with a total capacity of 365 MW (Larona, Balambano and Karebbe), capable of minimizing dependency on fossil fuel.

That’s not all, Vale managed all B3 (hazardous) and non-B3 waste under its 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) principle. In 2024, all non-B3 waste (nickel slag) can be 100 percent reused.
