MIND ID Integrates Sustainable Program in Commitment to Protect the Sea

3 July 2025

Jakarta, 3 July 2025 – As a maritime country, Indonesia has extraordinary marine potential which has become a strategic area for national mining industry activities. In the spirit of downstreaming launched by the government, MIND ID or Mining Industry Indonesia, the Holding State-Owned Enterprise for the Mining Industry, takes an important role as the economic mover which maintains harmony with the environment, in particular, the marine ecosystem.

MIND ID integrates its Group Members to optimize the use of marine area as part of the operational territory of the mining industry and logistic channel, by running ecological recovery programs to maintain the sustainability of the marine flora and fauna ecosystem.

MIND ID President Director, Maroef Sjamsoeddin, said that as a strategic holding, the MIND ID Group is committed not only to making use of the marine area as part of the mining industry operations and support of the company’s business, but also to consistently implementing its responsibility in protecting this natural resource.

That is why operations will be in line with the prevailing license and supported by the commitment to comprehensively safeguard and conduct recovery of the environment.

“We believe that utilizing mineral resources does not mean disregarding the environment, whether land or marine territory. The sea especially should be maintained as it is giving huge benefits for Indonesia,” said Maroef in the Collaboration and Synergy of the MIND ID Group and Ministry of Marine and Fisheries (KKP) on Wednesday (2/7/2025).

Maroef ensures that each operation of the MIND ID Group is designed with mature and periodical planning and supervision, in order to prevent environmental degradation. The company is also proactively collaborating with the KKP Director General of Marine Spatial Planning so that the creation of value in utilizing marine space as well as efforts to maintain marine ecology are implemented sustainably.

Moreover, Maroef continued, one of the form of commitment of the MIND ID Group on marine conservation is through the Fishing Ground program, aimed at increasing the fish population in the coastal areas.

The program is implemented with the lowering of fish aggregating devices, which is a man-made habitat, to support the increase of marine biodiverity, which in 2024, as many as 133 of these devices have been lowered in the waters of Bangka Belitung Province and have provided a positive impact to the rise in biodiversity and long term economic benefits for coastal communities.

Moreover, the MIND ID Group has also implemented a mangrove planting program to protect the coastal ecosystem balance.

Throughout 2024, more than 56,500 mangrove seedlings have been planted in Bangka Belitung and North Sumatera Provinces.

Mangrove forests not only act as a natural fortress against abrasion and intrusion of sea water, but also an important habitat for marine biota.

Moroef stressed that in the context of national development, the utilization of marine area is a necessity. However, the MIND ID Group is consistently endeavouring to make an example of industrialization capable of implementing impactful ecological improvements.

During the opportunity, the KPP Director General of Marine Spatial Management, Kartika Listriana, explained that Indonesia has national jurisdiction of 6.4 million kilometer square of water with a marine biodiversity wealth potential of 8,500 species of marine mega biodiversity, 50,875 km² of coral reefs, 2,935 km² of seagrass meadow, and 33,641 km² of mangrove ecosystem.

Indonesia also has 16 UNESCO biosphere reserves and geoparks in the coastal and marine areas. With the extent of the natural wealth, the value of its marine economy is estimated to be US$3 to 6 trillion, coming from natural wealth and marine ecosystem service.

Kartika also expressed her appreciation to the MIND ID Group who had the initiative to continue strengthening the synergy and collaboration with KKP, thereby able to promote MIND ID Group’s good corporate governance.

“KKP has published 46 KKPRL (Appropriate Marine Area Utilization Activities) Agreements for the MIND ID Group, with a total of paid Non-Tax State Revenue reaching Rp 165.33 billion, with details of activities in marine mining, Special Terminal and Private Terminals, to support mining activities on land,” she said.
