MIND ID Targets Emission Reduction by 5.3 million tons of CO2 as its Commitment to Protect the Environment

Jakarta, 3 November 2023 – MIND ID or Mining Industry Indonesia, the Holding State-Owned Enterprise for the Mining Industry, is committed to protecting the environment of the areas surrounding its mining operations, as part of Good Mining Practice. This is also confirmed as one of the pillars of the company.

Company Secretary of MIND ID or Mining Industry Indonesia, the Holding State-Owned Enterprise for the Mining Industry, Heri Yusuf, said that one of the focus of the MIND ID Group is decarbonization.

This is an important commitment for MIND ID Members to deal with the impacts of climate change. In order to make this a reality, MIND ID Members have declared an initiation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with quite significant targets.

“The Company targets to reduce emission from the energy and industrial Process and Product Uses, including the reduction of its carbon footprints by 16% in 2030 from its business-as-usual emission in the year and support the net zero emission aspiration of the Indonesian Government in 2060,” said Heri.

He believes that MIND ID and its mining members have also set the target for CO2 emission reduction in stages, from 691 thousand tons in 2023 to 5.3 million tons in 2030. The specification per year for the CO2 emission reduction target of the MIND ID Group is 691,038 tons of CO2 in 2023, and 382,468 tons of CO2 in 2024.

Subsequently, the CO2 emission reduction target in 2025 increases significantly to 1,198,984 tons of CO2, and the target increases again in 2026 to 1,305,993 tons of CO2.

One year later, in 2027, the emission reduction target goes up to 1,338,171 tons of CO2, and up again in 2028 to 1,354,552 tons of CO2.

In 2029, the CO2 emission reduction target of MIND ID and its mining sub-holdings also increased by 3,337 tons of CO2, to become 1,357,889 tons of CO2.

“Only in 2030, will the emission reduction target of MIND ID become very ambitious, going up about five times to become 5,351,203 tons of CO2,” he said.

To realize its decarbonization target, MIND ID also has three decarbonization strategies, the first is AVOID, which is the provision, investigation, and promotion of low-carbon energy in all supply chains. The second is REDUCE, to limit as much emission as possible with energy-efficient operations and increase the use of gas fuel by 20-30%.

Subsequently, MITIGATE, takes and offset all remaining emission. This action includes carbon capture, reinstating the technology to capture CO2 emissions from operational activities, and digitalization of sustainable energy efficiency escalation.

“Decarbonization is an important commitment for MIND ID Members to deal with the impacts of climate change. MIND ID Members have declared the initiation to reduce greenhouse gas emission and have quite significant targets,” said Heri.

In decarbonization, the company targets to reduce emissions from the energy and Industrial Process and Product Uses, including reduction of its carbon footprints by up to 16% in 2030 from the business-as-usual emission in that year and support the aspiration of the net zero emission of the Indonesian Government in 2060.

Moreover, the company has also posted a number of important achievements in implementing its Sustainability Pathway. As part of the efforts of MIND ID Group for decarbonization, in 2022, the MIND ID Group has achieved a reduction target of 1% of business-as-usual emissions, amounting to 240,000 tonsCO2eq or 6%.

“This is based on the efforts of responsible energy and production process efficiency as well as decarbonization efforts which can reduce the emission level significantly,” said Heri.
