MIND ID’s COMMITMENT AS THE PIONEER OF DECARBONIZATION IN INDONESIA

Jakarta, 04 December 2022. Global warming, climate change are the focus of the United Nations to start taking real action. There is a need for a joint agreement to substantially reduce global greenhouse gas emissions to limit the global temperature increase in this century to 2.0 degrees Celsius in 2030. This is contained the the Paris Agreement.

Indonesia is one of the countries who took part in the commitment to limit temperature increase to at least 1.5 degrees Celcius, understanding that this limit will significantly reduce the risks and impact of climate change.

Moreover, it is necessary to step up the ability to adapt to the impact of climate change, raise climate resilience, and implement low greenhouse gas emission development without threatening food production.

Also important is to make a consistent financial supply to achieve low greenhouse gas emission and resilience towards climate change.

The energy sector and mining sector are among the industries taking an important role in bringing this about, as both industries are crucial key players to respond to the successful achievement of the target.

MIND ID, as the Holding State-Owned Enterprise of the Mining Industry in Indonesia, takes part as key player to bring about Indonesia’s role in the commitment. Under the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises and leadership of Hendi Prio Santoso, MIND ID’s President Director, MIND ID implements the sustainability strategy in the implementation of the decarbonization program, together with all of its members: PT Antam Tbk, PT Bukit Asam Tbk, PT Freeport Indonesia, PT Inalum (Persero), PT Timah Tbk.

“The sustainability strategy was compiled in line with the Noble Purpose of the Company, namely “We explore natural resources for civilization, prosperity and a brighter future”. The MIND ID Group intends to become a world class integrated natural resource company with a strong commitment to communities and the environment,” said Hendi.

MIND ID’s Corporate Responsibility Framework was developed based on the ISO 26000 as principle guidelines, 10 mining principles of ICMM as performance standard and SDGs as the information disclosure structure to stakeholders. MIND ID compiles the sustainability strategy consisting of 6 pillars, namely: Environment and Climate Change; Smart Operations; Human Capital; Communities; Economic Growth; and Governance.

MIND ID Group’s Environmental Pillar ensures that the operational activities of the MIND ID Group are implemented with due attention to the principles of sustainability and setting forth good mining practices in its mining activities. This is done to minimize the operational impact on the natural environment, fauna as well as flora, in the surrounding areas of operations.

“MIND ID always ensures responsible efforts in mining activities, with the commitment to sustainability principles and the use of the ESG Framework, as this is the key for movements of civilization and future of the nation,” Hendi added.

Moreover, the MIND ID Group has set a target of emission reduction by 1 percent in 2022. MIND ID is recorded as having sucessfully reduce greenhouse gas emission of 71 thousand tons CO2e in 2021.

The commitment represents the efforts of the company to reduce emission from the energy and Industrial Process and Product Uses (IPPU) of 15.8 percent in 2030 and supports the Indonesian Government’s aspirations of net zero in 2060.

“MIND ID initiates sustainability through approaches to the circular economy concept, translated into three decarbonization pillars, namely Avoid, Reduce and Mitigate,” said Hendi.

The Avoid Pillar is a commitment of the MIND ID Group to provide, invest and raise low carbon energy solutions throughout the value chain. The Reduce Pillar confirms the company’s commitment to restrict emission as much as possible, and Mitigate underlines the emission capturing and offsetting steps.

“Through the sustainability program and decarbonization strategy, MIND ID and all of its members are committed to achieve the goals which have been jointly stipulated. This has made the MIND ID Group, as the Holding State-Owned Enterprise of the Mining Industry in Indonesia, the pioneer of the decarbonization program in Indonesia,” Hendi concluded.
