MIND ID Group Deals with Stunting through Education to Millennials

Jakarta, 23 January 2024 – MIND ID, the Holding State-Owned Enterprise for the Mining Industry, participates in the efforts to address stunting by providing education to millennials. This is conducted by one of its Members, PT Timah Tbk, who is moving rapidly to assist in dealing with stunting in the company’s operational areas.

“As part of the MIND ID Group, PT Timah Tbk continues to be committed to raising the quality of health of the people living in the surrounding operational area. This is in line with the government’s program to deal with stunting towards the coming Golden Indonesia 2045,” said MIND ID Corporate Secretary, Heri Yusuf.

Throughout 2023, PT Timah Tbk has made various concrete efforts in handling stunting through the Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) program conducted holistically. PT Timah Tbk provided education on stunting to millennials, women, and health cadres, who are expected to become agents of change.

PT Timah Tbk also distributed food packages for children who have been identified as stunted in its operational areas. Such activities are conducted together with the Mobil Sehat or Healthy Car program.

The steps taken by PT Timah Tbk serve as concrete evidence of stunting treatment and prevention. The company actively provides health literation to teenagers and mothers through its program to reduce stunting or Kemunting (Kegiatan Menurunkan Stunting). 

The program to reduce stunting is also conducted together with the support to build decent sanitation (MCKs) for the people. PT Timah Tbk supports the construction of MCKs and waste disposals to hasten the Open Defecation Free (ODF) program.

PT Timah Tbk’s various programs towards a healthy community with a focus on eradicating stunting has been awarded by the People’s Social Workers Association or Ikatan Pekerja Sosial Masyarakat (IPSM) for the Bangka Belitung (Babel) Islands Province in August 2023. PT Timah Tbk is deemed to be one of the companies that plays a role in handling stunting and poverty alleviation in Babel.

Not only PT Timah Tbk, but various steps to prevent stunting are also conducted by other members of the MIND ID Group. PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (ANTAM), for instance, is committed to supporting the reduction of stunting in the Bauxite Mining Business Unit area, Sanggau Regency, West Kalimantan, through the Healthy Generation Free of Stunting program (GEN SEHAT).

This program aims to improve the nutritional quality of the people and prevent stunting. PT ANTAM Tbk also has a similar program called Rumah Peduli Remaja Putri (RUPE-RUPE).

PT ANTAM Tbk has found several factors causing stunting in this area, such as inadequate nutrition for pregnant mothers and newborn babies, poor childcare, inadequate healthcare services, and many more. In 2022, the prevalence of stunting in the Sanggau Regency stood at 32.5 percent, thereby causing stunting to be one of the focuses of PT ANTAM Tbk’s Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) program.

Meanwhile, PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) a member of the MIND ID Group, links with the Freeport Employees Instro Community to support the eradication of stunting. PTFI conducted educational activities for the people called Peduli Stunting or Concerned with Stunting through the Local Complementary Food Program in Mimika Regency, Central Papua Province, in October 2023.

This action serves as a preventive measure to keep mothers and fetuses healthy until the birthing process. PTFI teaches how to make complementary food (MPASI) by using local food resources commonly found in the Papua region, such as tubers, various types of fish, and vegetables. 

PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) also takes part in eliminating stunting through the Rumpun Pangan Dengan Energi Terbarukan yang Ramah Lingkungan (Ruang Rural) or Foods with Environmentally Friendly Renewable Energy. In collaboration with PT Pengayom Tani Sejagad, an economic institution of farmers, PT Bukit Asam Tbk has successfully increased access to nutritious food for the public, especially the poor.

This collaboration has produced organic red rice planted at the village of Rejosari Mataram, Sub-district of Seputih Mataram, Central Lampung. Through this program, PT Bukit Asam Tbk also increases public awareness of the importance of nutrition, especially for pregnant women and toddlers.

Similarly, PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (INALUM) also conducted several sustainable programs to address stunting in its operational areas to support Indonesia Bebas Stunting 2030 or Indonesia Free of Stunting 2030. PT INALUM has a program to improve nutrition for toddlers afflicted with stunting, a foster father program to reduce stunting, and a program to prevent stunting for pregnant women.

The program to improve the nutrition of toddlers afflicted with stunting is conducted through the socialization of nutritional improvement and the provision of nutritional intakes to families that have toddlers afflicted with stunting at the Kuala Tanjung and Kuala Indah areas, Batu Bara Regency. The company also donated food packages for 120 days to 29 families and their toddlers with strict supervision by relevant health institutions to measure the health development of toddlers.

In the Bapak Asuh Stunting or Foster Fathers program to reduce stunting, PT INALUM takes on the role of foster father for 30 toddlers afflicted with stunting, in the areas around the company, by improving nutrition and active monitoring. Furthermore, the Stunting Preventive Program for Pregnant Mothers is conducted by providing information on how to prevent stunting, such as nutrition education, provision of supplements, pregnant women exercises, and regular health checks.
