Raising Local Dreams to National Stage: Journey of Micro and Small Business Players (UMKs) Under The Guidance of MIND ID
Jakarta, 16 June 2025 – In the midst of economic recovery post pandemic, micro and small business players (UMK) have become the pulse which maintains Indonesia’s economic stability and growth. Its contribution is phenomenal, sustaining more than 60% of the national Gross Domestic Product. However, their spirit and fighting power are frequently not comparable to the access and support they have.
This lies the real role of MIND ID or Mining Industry Indonesia, the Holding State-Owned Enterprise for the Mining Industry, who is present as the strategic partner for development. Through various funding, training to promotion programs, MIND ID and all its holding members continue to boost the UMKs under their guidance, to promote and realize their best potential.
Up to 2024, the MIND ID Group consisting of PT Aneka Tambang Tbk, PT Bukit Asam Tbk, PT Freeport Indonesia, PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium, PT Timah Tbk, and PT Vale Indonesia Tbk, have fostered more than 10,000 micro and small business players (UMK) in various operational areas. From the number, as many as 1,029 of these micro and small business players (UMKs) succeeded in posting improvements – from their sales volume, competitiveness, as well as market reach – since 2021 to 2024.
One of the success stories comes from South Sumatera. Pempek Hudi is one of the shrimp cake home business that comes from a small kitchen in Palembang, which is now becoming a local culinary icon ready to compete at the national level.
“Before, my turnover was only about Rp30 million per month. Now, it has reached Rp300 million. I have even been able to employ 13 full time employees,” said Haiedi Ulandari, Pempek Hyudi Founder, reminiscing about his journey.
The turning point of the business occurred in 2022, when Pempek Hudi joined the micro and small business players (UMK) guidance program conducted by PT Bukit Asam Tbk. Under the program, Haiedi took part in intensive training, promotions in national exhibitions, and business development support.
“Every time I took part in exhibitions held by PTBA, there were always new customers. From Jakarta, Jambi, even Bangka. Many still order routinely up to this day,” he said.
From West Bangka, a similar story comes from the micro and small business players (UMK) under the guidance of PT Timah Tbk, Ak Leho. His home business processing shrimp cake or pempek, a speciality of Belo Laut Village, is not only popular in his village, but also starting to break into markets outside the area.
“In the past, our production depended on shrimp season. Now, as we have a freezer from PT Timah, we can stock material and production every day,” said Mersi, founder of Ak Leho.
PT Timah not only provided training and promotional access, the company also assists in production efficiency through the provision of tools such as grinder, vacuum sealer, production house, and marketing support.
“Our spirit continues to rise, not only because of the assistance, but also because we feel really supported. Even PT Timah is our permanent customer,” said Mersi, full of gratitude.
These stories are evidence that the right support from state-owned companies will be able to bring hope and open new doors for smallholders to perform in a larger stage.
Empowerment of micro and small business players (UMK) is a long term commitment of MIND ID in contributing to Indonesia’s sovereignity and prosperous future.
