Reduce greenhouse gas emission to assist in dealing with global climate change.

MIND ID supports G20 Agenda, implementing Decarbonization by Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emission

11 November 2022

Jakarta – President Director of MIND ID, the Holding State-Owned Enterprise for the Mining Industry, Hendi Prio Santoso, expressed his commitment to continually reduce greenhouse gas emission to assist in dealing with global climate change.

“We are committed to assist the program to reduce the impact of global climate change. This commitment is being manifested in one of our members recently,” explained Hendy in Jakarta, Wednesday (9/11).

Hendi refers to the commitment of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) who presented the company’s plan to reduce greenhouse gas emission of up to 60 percent in 2030, at the Conference of the Parties (COP) 27, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), at Sharma el-Sheikh, Egypt, on Sunday, 6 November 2022.

PTFI, together with the Indonesian delegation, contributed to the national climate change agenda to strengthen the 2030 target of the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) as stipulated in the Paris Agreement. The contribution is reflected by the efforts of the company to reduce greenhouse gas emission by 30 percent, since PTFI lastly participated in the COP last year in Glasgow.

In the panel discussion at the Indonesian Paviliun which presented the theme “Stronger Climate Action Together”, PTFI was represented by President Director Tony Wenas, who stressed the sustainability principle of the Company. “Dealing with the challenges and impact of climate change needs the involvement of various parties, including the private sector. In 2021, PTFI successfully reduced greenhouse gas emission by 22 percent, through sustainable innovation and commitment. The innovation constituted the transition towards natural gas liquified energy source which has a carbon dioxide emission of 40 percent lower than coal, use of low emission underground electric rail, and operating dual fuel 168 MW electric power generator with biodiesel,” explained Tony.

Aside from the sustainable strategy and principle, PTFI, as one of the bigest copper producer in Indonesia, will play an important role in supporting the transition towards low carbon economy, specifically for renewable energy infrastructure. “In line with the increasing global demand for copper, PTFI will continue to balance the production increase in its operational activities with the commitment towards sustainability,” Tony added.

PTFI also continues its land reclamation and rehabilitation program. Up to 2021, PTFI has conducted reclamation of overburden (batuan penutup – overburden?) in 432 hectares of sub-alpine ecosystem, rehabilitation of 962 lowland areas, reclamation of 1,160 hectares of tailings, mangrove planting in 480 hectares of land, and planting of up to 5 million trees. The entire effort conducted by PTFI is aimed at driving carbon emission sequestration, conserve the land surrounding the operational areas, and support the achievement of Indonesia’s NDC target in 2030.
