MIND ID Commitment to Strengthen Marine Aquaculture Support
Jakarta, 17 July 2025 – MIND ID or Mining Industry Indonesia, the Holding State-Owned Enterprise for the Mining Industry, is committed to ensuring that the benefits of mineral resource management can be felt inclusively by all layers of the communities in operational areas.
The MIND ID Group, through its Social and Environmental Responsibility program, has consistently implemented the program for the economic development of coastal and marine communities by supporting fish cultivation activities.
The local people are expected to have a new source of employment with better quality and sustainability in the future.
Minister of Marine and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, extends his appreciation for MIND ID’s contribution in supporting the utilization of marine areas for productive and environmentally friendly activities, including the practice of fish cultivation.
He explained that the government is currently focused on transforming the economy of coastal communities, from conventional fishing activities to a more planned and profitable fish cultivation.
Moreover, the cultivation activities impacted a favourable on marine biodiversity, as well as maintaining the people’s nutritional quality by consuming fish from cultivation.
“Cultivation activities are still small, about 5 tons of production per year. However, we continue to encourage marine culture in every area to be continuously developed. From hunting and fishing, we now direct the people to turn to cultivation,” he said.
MIND ID Corporate Secretary, Pria Utama, conveyed that the development of fish cultivation activities is part of the community empowerment program in the vicinity of the marine operational areas of the MIND ID Group.
The program is expected to create new economic sources that are more stable, especially for fishermen facing the uncertainty of fishing and the challenges of extreme weather.
With the provision of assistance, training, and intensive accompaniment, the people are given skills to operate fish cultivation professionally. The assisted communities also become an inspiration for other fishermen to revert from fish catching to cultivation.
“The fish cultivation development program will be implemented consistently, and we hope that the impact will be increasingly significant and can become the source of economic strength for regional communities,” he said.
One of the leading programs is the POS PELAUT (Silvofishery Polyculture as Empowerment of Sawang Laut Fishermen) implemented by PT Timah Tbk. This program encourages scores of fishermen to cultivate white snapper as an alternative livelihood, particularly when bad weather prevents them from going out to sea.
The program has developed into a local economic strength based on regional wisdom. Up to 2024, the program has reached more than 100 fishermen from 11 fish cultivation groups at Kundur Island. This means that more than 100 families now have access to a more sustainable income source.
In North Sumatera, the MIND ID Group, through INALUM, provides assistance and accompaniment for vaname shrimp cultivation for community groups in Batu Bara Regency. At first, they only have Bioflok shrimp ponds, which contain 50 thousand vaname shrimp fries with a harvest of a maximum of 700 kilograms.
Now the ponds he manages are more extensive and capable of containing 150 vaname shrimps, with harvest reaching 2,000 Kg (2 tons) once every 4 months. The local people also benefit from a better income compared to catching fish.
“We believe that the program will increasingly draw the attention of the local people living in the marine operational areas. Our commitment is to continue our accompaniment and develop the people’s potential to enable more meaningful social and economic impact in the future,” concluded Pria.
