MIND ID Signs MoU on State-Owned Enterprise Decarbonization

Jakarta, 7 February 2022 - MIND ID or Mining Industry Indonesia, the Holding State-Owned Enterprise for the Mining Industry, with members PT Aneka Tambang Tbk, PT Bukit Asam Tbk, PT Freeport Indonesia, PT Inalum (Persero) and PT Timah Tbk, together with other State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN), sign a Memorandum of Understanding on Decarbonization of State-Owned Enterprises. Vice Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Pahala Nugraha Mansyuri and Deputy for Environment and Forestry Management Coordination of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Nani Hendiarti witness the event in Jakarta, 2 February 2022.

MIND ID’s Director for Institutional Relations Dany Amrul Ichdan said that “MIND ID Group is committed to achieve the emission reduction target of the energy sector and Industrial Process and Product Uses (IPPU) of 15.8% in 2030 and to support the net zero emission aspiration of the Indonesian Government in 2060.  The BUMN Decarbonization MoU shall strengthen and measure the efforts to reduce emission in future.”

The MIND ID Group recorded emission produced by the Company as coming from two areas.  In the 2019 baseline, Scope I comes from the use of fossil fuel (coal and marine fuel oil) in the processing phase, and diesel fuel for project vehicles and heavy equipment.  For Scope II – the use the electricity from the PLN (State Electricity Company) grid for operations and production.

 In 2021, the MIND ID Group produced emission from Scope I and II of 3.335 million tons of CO2e sourced from Business as Usual (BAU) mining production and operational activities.  To reduce the greenhouse gas emission in 2021, the MIND ID group undertook several Scope I and II decarbonization initiatives and succeeded in reducing emission of 71 thousand tons of CO2e or 2.13% in BAU mining production and operational activities.

To underscore its commitment to achieve the Greenhouse Gas Emission reduction target, starting in 2021 and years to come, the MIND ID Group has identified emission reduction commitment initiatives. Each member of the MIND ID Group has innovative plans in mining and processing activities aimed at promoting operational effectiveness to reduce emissions.

Aside from the decarbonization program, the MIND ID Group undertook efforts to produce environmentally friendly energy among the local communities while at the same time aiming to raise the economy in accordance with the SDG 08 goal, namely Economic Growth and SDG 13 goal, Climate Action, by constructing solar power generators (PLTS) for farmers at Bukit Asam and Bangka Belitung.

Dany added that the Decarbonization Program is a manifestation of one of MIND ID’s Sustainability Pathway, namely Environment & Climate Change. The MoU is jointly signed with Perkebunan Nusantara Holding, Pupuk Indonesia Holding, Pertamina, PLN, Semen Indonesia Holding, dan the Indonesians Classification Bureau.

The Mining Industry Holding was officially formed on 27 November 2017, with PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Persero) as the holding company with majority shares in four largest mining companies in Indonesia, PT Aneka Tambang Tbk, PT Bukit Asam Tbk, PT Timah Tbk and PT Freeport Indonesia.

On 17 August 2019, the Mining Industry Holding was transformed into MIND ID (Mining Industry Indonesia) to differentiate the functions of INALUM as Holding and as Operational company.
