Coal Downstream Strategic Synergy, Creating National Energy Independency

9 January 2026

Jakarta, 9 January 2026 - MIND ID or Mining Industry Indonesia, the Holding State-Owned Enterprise for the Mining Industry, and PT Pertamina (Persero) strengthens strategic collaboration to support the Asta Cita (Eight Goals of the Core Policy Agenda) of President Prabowo Subianto, to strengthen the resilience and independency of the national energy sector.

This cooperation is focused on the speed of the coal downstream efforts to become alternative energy products such as Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG), Dimethyl Ether (DME) and Methanol through the strengthening of national mineral, coal, and energy chain.

This transformative step is marked by the signing of the strategic cooperation between MIND ID and Pertamina, and witnessed by Danantara Indonesia Chief Technology Officer, Sigit P. Santosa, and Managing Director Industrialization Ardy Muawin, on Friday (9/1/2026).

This initiative constitutes the tangible form of MIND ID’s active role in implementing the mandate given by the government in supporting the downstream and industrialization agenda through the utilization of coal downstream technology.

Danantara Indonesia Chief Technology Officer, Sigit P. Santosa, said that the cooperation between MIND ID and Pertamina reflects the integrated closeness in developing the national energy system. As a large country, Indonesia requires energy diversification capable of sustaining development.

“Collaboration and synergy between strategic state enterprises can strengthen national energy foundation. Technology based downstreaming becomes an important instrument to optimize the use of domestic resources and at the same time, build an energy system that is stronger, more efficient and long term oriented,” said Sigit.

MIND ID President Director, Maroef Sjamsoeddin, stressed that this cooperation is part of the efforts to strengthen national industrial structure through the development of mineral, coal, and energy value chain in the country.

Through cooperation with Pertamina, MIND ID is committed to drive downstreaming efforts which provide economic value added, reduce dependency on import, raise competitiveness, open new employment, as well as strengthen long term national energy security.

“MIND ID, through Bukit Asam who will later have the role of supplier, together with Pertamina, will really supervise each phase of the cooperation so that the benefits can be realized and felt by the entire Nation and Country,” he concluded.

In this collaboration, Pertamina will have the role as offtaker and aggregator of distribution infrastructure. With its leading distribution network, Pertamina ensures the downstreaming results of coal, such as Dimethyl Ether (DME), Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG), and Methanol – can be absorbed and channeled effectively to the people and industries as substitution for imported energy.

PT Pertamina (Persero) President Director, Simon Aloysius Mantiri, stated that this collaboration is a historical milestone for Indonesia’s energy sovereignty.

“As the national energy backbone, we are committed to optimize the distribution infrastructure of Pertamina to support this downstreaming efforts through cooperation with MIND ID. This is our tangible action to reduce dependence on LPG import and ensure that affordable energy is provided for the people, in line with the government’s energy self-sufficiency target,” said Simon.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources projects that the national LPG consumption will reach 10 million metric tons (MT) in 2026, while new domestic production has only reached 1.3-1.4 million MT.

MIND ID-Pertamina synergy through the utilization of Coal to DME and Coal to SNG, has become a strategic solution to close the deficit using domestic natural resource, as an effort to strengthen resilience and independency of the national energy sector.
