MIND ID Group’s Decarbonization Strategy to Reduce Emission

MIND ID or Mining Industry Indonesia, the Holding State-Owned Enterprise for the Mining Industry, is committed to achieve its target of emission reduction from the energy sector and Industrial Process and Product Uses (IPPU) of 15.8% in 2030 and support the net zero emission (NZE) aspiration of the Indonesian Government in 2060.  The Decarbonization program is a manifestation of one of MIND ID’s Sustainability Pathway pillar, namely Environment & Climate Change.

The Company, whose members consist of PT Aneka Tambang Tbk, PT Bukit Asam Tbk, PT Freeport Indonesia, PT Inalum (Persero) and PT Timah Tbk, is designing an initiative to reduce carbon emission.  Director of MIND ID’s Institutional Relations said that these efforts constitute a combination of fuel transition, production efficiency to carbon offset.

“The MIND ID Group has various plans and innovations in its operational activities to reduce emissions end to end,” said Dany.  This would mean the efforts to reduce or suppress emission at every aspect and process of its operations.  MIND ID Members conduct energy efficiency efforts and greenhouse glass emission reduction through innovations, in mining as well as mineral processing.

The MIND ID Group recorded emissions produced by the Company deriving from two scopes.  From the inventory conducted, scope 1 originated from the use of fossil fuel (coal and marine fuel oil) for processing, and diesel fuel for project vehicles and heavy equipment.  Scope 2 covers the use the electricity from the PLN (State Electricity Company) grid for operational and production activities.

In 2021, the MIND ID Group produced emission from scope 1 and 2 of 3,335 million tons of CO2e deriving from Business As Usual (BAU) in its mining production and operational activities.  To reduce the 2021 greenhouse gas emission, the MIND ID Group implemented several decarbonization initiatives and succeeded in recording emission reduction of 71 thousand tons of CO2e or 2.13% of the BAU emission from its mining production and operational activities.

Dany went on to say that the MIND ID Group also conducted efforts to provide environmentally friendly energy to the local communities while at the same time aiming at promoting the economy in accordance to Sustainable Development Goal 08, namely Economic Growth and SDG 13, Climate Action, by constructing solar power generators (PLTS) to support farmers in South Sumatera.

The MIND ID Group, in its efforts to protect the environment, is also managing waste in accordance to the prevailing standards and regulations.  In order to deal with waste generation, MIND ID Members undertook efforts to reuse waste through various innovations.  Moreover, the Company is also working with licensed and certified waste management entities to stabilize and solidify waste, using waste as substitute fuel and kept in eco landfills.
