Indonesia Mining & Minerals Research Institute, The Research Institute for Mineral and Coal Cluster State-Owned Enterprises

Jakarta, 29 April 2021 – MIND ID or Mining Industry Indonesia, the Holding State-Owned Enterprise for the Mining Industry, with members PT ANTAM Tbk, PT Bukit Asam Tbk, PT Freeport Indonesia, PT Inalum (Persero) and PT Timah Tbk, is transforming the Mining & Minerals Industry Institute (MMII) into the Indonesia Mining & Minerals Research Institute (IMMRI). MIND ID is designating IMMRI to support the research and development activities of the mining industry.

The initiation for the transformation of the Learning Center, Research Center dan Innovation Center function is one of the program priorities of the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises. MIND ID shall establish IMMRI as the backbone to support the long-term strategy of the company to face changes in the Indonesian mining industry.

Orias Petrus Moedak, CEO of the MIND ID Group, said that “MIND ID is committed to research and innovation efforts in the mining industry, particularly in the MIND ID Group. This is aligned to the sustainability spirit of the Company, encompassing Environment, Social and Governance (ESG). What we produce and the current production must benefit the current and future generations, therefore the research and development of the mining industry bears an important role.”.

Orias added that the innovations being implemented are always aimed at achieving the most efficient methods and technology in the mining industry, thereby positively impacting on the environment and social conditions.

IMMRI must become an institute of excellence in the mineral and coal cluster which shall function as: Coordinator in compiling the blueprint of the institution; Leading the transformation process and change management in the formation and implementation of the institute; Coordinating the gathering and validation or confirmation of data and information of state-owned enterprise members of its cluster; Role model in technology among the state-owned cluster members; and Driving collaborations in technology innovations, within the cluster as well as among state-owned enterprise clusters.

Iman Bustomi, Assistant Deputy of Technology and Information of the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises, said that “State-Owned Enterprises are strongly encouraged to build the competitiveness of the core business of the respective cluster. The mineral and coal cluster, specifically, is expected to elevate the competitiveness in the value chain of its core business. Transforming learning and research to become an important enabler in the efforts to improve the competitive edge of State-owned Enterprises.”

While Chairman of IMMRI’s Advisory Board, Prof DR Soebroto M.A. said that “State-owned Enterprises are tasked by the country as pioneer, driver and support for economic advancement. While economic advancement is reflected by our ability to compete. One of the ways to respond is to raise the ability of research to seek new ways to produce, at less cost and maximum efforts. IMMRI needs to become a research and innovation institute for the advancement of research and development of the mineral and coal clusters.

IMMRI, as the strategic entity of MIND ID has passed an important milestone, among which is the implementation of the MMII Research Award 2019. Three Indonesian researchers with the most innovative works have been selected and given financial aid to continue their research:
1. DR. ENG. Januarti Jaya Eka Putri S.T, M.T from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember. Innovation of environmentally friendly concrete product with encapsulated hazardous and toxic waste microbe content utilizing fly ash and bottom ash to be recycled as construction material to replace cement.
2. DR. IR. Sotya Astutiningsih M. Eng from the University of Indonesia. The utilization of ferronickel slag as three dimensional mortar for the construction industry, which will raise the added value of nickel processing’s side product, for construction material, combined with three dimensional construction mold technology.
3. PROF. DR. Mohammad Zaki Mubarok S.T, M.T from the Bandung Institute of Technology. Development of nickel sulphate and cobalt sulphate synthesis from laterite nickel ore for Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) Oxide type lithium battery cathode for application in electrical vehicles.
