Bali, 29 August 2022 – PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA), Member of MIND ID or Mining Industry Indonesia, the Holding State-Owned Enterprise for the Mining Industry, focusing on the management of coal, is collaborating with the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) to conduct the 3rd Energy Transition Working Group Meeting – Parallel Event of the G20 Presidency of Indonesia - with the theme “The Role of Coal Industry Towards Energy Transition and Circular Economy”.

The Executive Talkshow session is a forum to generate ideas and practices which have been undertaken as a step towards joint development in supporting sustainable energy transition with due observance to circular economy.  Director General of Mineral and Coal of the ESDM Ministry, Ridwan Djamaluddin, stressed at the opening of the session, that energy transition does not need to eliminate coal. With technology innovation, reduced emission from coal to Net Zero Emission in 2060 can be achieved, allowing the coal industry to support sustainable energy transition.

“Let us consider other ways.  The key word is sustainable energy. Net Zero Emission in 2060 is the big scenario which we need to formulate with extraordinary measures. The key is innovation.  Moreover, it is important to pay due observance to the aspects of affordability and mastery of technology,” he said.

The Executive Talkshow also saw the attendance of Expert Staff to the ESDM Minister for Strategic Planning and Chair of the G20 Energy Transition Working Group (ETWG) Yudo Dwinanda Priadi, MIND ID’s Director for Business Development Dilo Seno Widagdo, chief executives of coal mining companies, as well as academicians and research institute executives.

MIND ID’s Director Dilo Seno Widagdo said: “MIND ID supports all manners of innovation and improvements to sustainability in order to create sustainable businesses.  Moreover, there also needs to be collaboration with communities in the areas surrounding mining operations, allowing the presence of MIND ID in the midst of these communities to create better civilization, for now and the future.”

Subsequently, the Mini Innovation Workshop facilitated transparency in innovation to reduce emission and comprehensive energy transition from various related stakeholders.  Such condition is expected to create support, collaboration, active participation, and ideas from stakeholders to strengthen the spirit of innovation and align joint objectives to achieve global emission reduction.

Also attending the Workshop, among others, are the Head of Mining Technology Research Center of BRIN (National Research and Innovation Agency) Anggoro Tri Mursito, PTBA Director of Human Capital Suherman, mining association leaders, Jury Panel and Advisor of Bukit Asam Innovation Awards 2022 Greenovator, leaders of research institutes and technology start-up companies, as well as members of the Y20 youth delegation.

The Mini Workshop seeks solutions to support emission reduction, particularly the importance of innovation to create carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) at more affordable cost.  Subsequently, workshop participants came to a consensus that the utilization of post mining land should pay due observance to the social and economic aspects, not only the environmental aspects, but also in accordance to the needs of local communities, efficient and right on target.

“The presence of experts, academicians, environmental management practitioners, and the best young generation in Y20, will also provide us all with views and insights to implement sustainable energy transition, while duly observing the circular economy. The participation, synergy, and collaboration from all parties will naturally make our steps easier and faster towards the achievement of the target which has been determined,” said PTBA President Director Arsal Ismail.

Both events concluded with the understanding that energy transition requires thorough planning and preparation. Commitment is also needed from all stakeholders to enable sustainable energy transition programs to be implemented according to target.  MIND ID and Members - PT Antam Tbk, PT Bukit Asam Tbk, PT Freeport Indonesia, PT Inalum (Persero), PT Timah Tbk - have agreed to implement the Noble Purpose: “We explore natural resources for civilization, prosperity and a brighter future.” Aside from aiming to becoming a world class company, it is important to note that MIND ID supports Net Zero Emission in 2060, in line with the target of the Indonesian Government.
