President Jokowi Observes MIND ID Group’s Mining History in Mimika, Papua

Papua, 1 September 2020. President Jokowi has a scheduled visit to Papua, in the eastern region of the country. After yesterday (31/08) inaugurating the Papua Football Academy (PFA) initiated by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) as a follow up on the success of XX PON (National Sports Week) 2021, the President and First Lady paid a visit to the Bunaken Museum.

The Bunaken Museum is located in Grasberg, here the President and First Lady Iriana, was accompanied by PTFI President Director, Tony Wenas, and PTFI President Commissioner, Richard Adkerson. Also accompanying the entourage were Cabinet Secretary, Pramono Anung, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises, Erick Thohir, and Minister of Investment/Head of the Capital Investment Coordinating Board, Bahlil Lahadalia.

The President held conversations and listened to explanations on PTFI’s mining history, for two hours. Tony explained that Grasberg is the second mine, while the first was Ertsberg.

“Are there no longer any mining activities in both mines?” asked the President.

“There is 100 percent no mining activities in both Etsberg and Grasberg. We are now conducting reclamation and maintaining the stability of the slopes,” Tony answered.

PTFI, together with the Members of MIND ID, the Holding State-Owned Enterprise for the Mining Industry, is committed to maintain the conservation and sustainability of the environment.  This is in line with the Sustainable Pathway of MIND ID in which the first pillar is to encourage sustainable environmental management in accordance to national and international standard regulations.

MIND ID’s Director for Institutional Relations, Dany Amrul Ichdan, said that: “MIND ID maintains its commitment to carry out all mining operations based on the principles of good mining practice.” This is also evident when some time ago, MIND ID joined the United Nation Global Compact (UNGC), a United Nations Pact, to encourage businesses and companies throughout the world to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies.

President Jokowi and First Ladi Iriana and group then continue to the underground mines after visiting Bunaken Museum.
